Job Description :
Animal Promise and The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation ( NFWF ) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Radar Sensor Systems Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will work on the development and testing of advanced sensor technologies aimed at detecting and protecting marine life, specifically North Atlantic Right Whales, in shipping lanes and migration areas to protect from vessel strikes. This role will involve creating innovative radar and sensor systems to alert vessels of the presence of whales and to enforce reduced speed zones for the protection of sea life.
Key Responsibilities :
Develop and Test Vessel-Mounted Sensors :
- Design and implement advanced sensor systems capable of detecting the presence of North Atlantic Right Whales in real-time.
- Conduct rigorous testing and validation of sensor performance in various marine environments.
- Collaborate with marine biologists and environmental experts to ensure sensor accuracy and reliability.
Create a Radar System for Speed Alert :
- Develop a radar system that can monitor vessel speeds and provide real-time alerts for speed reduction in designated low-speed zones.
- Integrate radar technology with existing navigation systems to ensure seamless operation and compliance.
- Test and refine the radar system to ensure its effectiveness in diverse maritime conditions.
Construct Whale Finder Detectors :
- Design and build Whale Finder Detectors to enhance awareness and protection of whales in migration areas.
- Utilize cutting-edge sensor and radar technologies to create a robust detection system.
- Collaborate with marine conservation organizations to align the detector's functionality with conservation goals.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Sensor Technology, Marine Technology, or a related field.
- Proven experience in developing and testing radar and sensor systems, preferably in a maritime context.
- Strong knowledge of marine life, particularly North Atlantic Right Whales, and the environmental challenges they face.
- Proficiency in programming and software development related to sensor technology.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience working with marine biologists and environmental conservation groups.
- Knowledge of maritime regulations and safety standards.
- Familiarity with vessel navigation systems and maritime communication protocols.
Application Process :
Interested candidates are invited to submit their resume, a cover letter detailing their relevant experience, and any supporting documentation.
